CASE STUDY 4:

Mozambique LNG Removable Drum Reels

Project Specification

At HCS, the bespoke products that we design, engineer and manufacture are delivered globally, our recent project took us to East Africa, where we delivered a project specific spooling unit to Mozambique.

The project brief from our client’s introduction included the requirement for an umbilical reel with the capability of an interchangeable drum.  The design challenge was the request for the drum to be changed over within an 8-hour window. The aim was to achieve full function umbilical change without having to remove the reel from its location.

HCS was tasked with building three sets of these systems, each with different operational requirements, including transport skids to house the spare umbilical’s and drums. In addition, one further standard reel was delivered, and all had a full accompanying package of sheaves, remote controls, and shipping baskets to transport equipment.

Our Delivery

The brief included the designing and engineering of several bespoke functions, which were critical to the project success. Our engineering and project management teams at HCS ensured the smooth delivery of:

  • Designing removable drums to ensure the clients change-out durations once introduced are minimal and efficient.
  • Introducing central bearings onto a toothed geared ring for smooth rotation of the drum.
  • Folding level wind system that engages with geared drive system.
  • Ensuring that all systems contain hydraulic controls to suit each umbilical configuration.

Results

This project presented another creative engineering challenge for HCS team who used their knowledge and experience to deliver. We achieved the project precisely to specification and excelled in the drum transfer function by providing this element in under half the time we initially estimated. We delivered this project to the client in January 2021
