CASE STUDY 3:

Stackable Reelers

Project Specification

The client required six reelers which met specification of being ‘stackable’. The specific challenge of this brief highlighted that deployment would be from a platform with severe space restrictions. The engineering challenge was to minimise the on-deck footprint during operation so that we could successfully deliver the brief.

Key elements of the specification included:

  • Zone 1 Hazardous Area.
  • Ambient Temperature – 10°C to 45°C.
  • Variable Speed.
  • Hydraulic Drive.
  • Constant tension.
  • Deployment Angle from 0 – 45°.
  • Safety Relay Circuit.
  • Electric Controls.
  • TH reel to have a wireless remote control.

Our Delivery

A ‘stackable’ design was proposed in which the workover reel could be stacked on top of the annulus reeler.   A bespoke hydraulic manifold was designed to allow the use of standard hydraulic components.  Controlling the drive system using hi-torque/low speed motors negated the need for a gearbox.  A swing out style diverter sheave was engineered on all the reelers.    Local, remote and wireless controls were incorporated on the tubing hanging reeler.

The Result

This unit was delivered in less than six months.  The ATEX and IECEx approved reelers met the full client spec of 37kW drive, operational at 50°C ambient temperatures within in Zone 1 hazardous areas.
